Bob Goldack has announced his retirement as editor of The White Tops. A selection committee has initiated a search to enlist applicants and select a replacement.
Some of the duties and other general responsibilities of
the editor are listed as follows. They underscore the importance of the job and
the commitment required over an extended period of time. Remuneration for this
position is set by the board of directors. Persons with questions should feel
free to contact Maxine House, Chairperson of the White Tops Policy Committee or CFA President Mary-Jane Foote.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:
Edit six issues
per year, which entails:
- Compiling information, news, photos, ads and other
materials.
- Work with contributors, originating story ideas,
contacting individuals to enlist their aid, envisioning page-by-page content
and layout.
- Keyboarding all stories and advertising material
(except camera-ready or disk material), and editing, proofreading and
formatting them.
- Turning it all into an attractive, readable magazine on
schedule.
- Acknowledge contributions of articles and photos and
return photos.
- Work with the president and convention chairperson to
publicize annual convention.
- Work with the election chairman to publicize annual
elections. Prepare Bio coverage. Prepare and have ballots and return envelopes
printed and delivered to the mailer for insertion with the magazine.
- Ensure that all inserts in The White Tops envelopes
conform to USPS regs.
- Work with the education chairman to print lists of
teaching and video resources.
- Coordinate the selling of advertising with advertising
manager.
- Receive and give special formatting to specific material
that goes in each issue:
- Under the Marquee
- Tanbark Topics
- Secretary’s Report
- Lists of new members
- In Memoriam
- Donors to the separate computer funds and the NCPS.
- Send magazine on a disk to the printer. Designate press
run. Later, check and sign off on blueline proof.
- For the mailer, tally advertising content of each issue,
mark ads in each issue according to USPS regs, prepare list of special
mailings. Also include “Statement of Ownership, Manaagement and Circulation
(USPS Form 3526) in September/October issue each year.
- Ensure that the mailer has an adequate supply of
printed envelopes in which to send magazines.
- Tally expense categories, including USPS computer
printout, of each issue, and compare to budget.
- Tally content of each issue re: photos, historical and
educational content, etc.
- Forward to the
secretary-treasurer payments for ads, subscriptions, etc.
- Respond to
requests for membership applications, requests for ideas and information from
authors and press. This is part of processing daily traffic that comes in by
mail, e-mail, telephone and fax that must be answered, acknowledged or
forwarded.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Be able to originate ideas and concepts for
interesting, significant stories and photos, and execute them in the most
efficient, economical manner.
- Possess computer and Internet skills adequate to:
- Use PageMaker, Microsoft Word and/or comparable
programs to produce camera-ready magazine pages to printer’s specs. Also be
able to scan photos for disk.
- Use the Internet and fax to receive stories, gather
information and send and receive messages, etc.
- Possess reporting, writing, editing, typographic and
photographic skills appropriate to accepted publishing standards, including:
- Ability to take pictures, crop and create photo
layouts.
- Knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style
- Possess a thorough knowledge of libel laws and
copyright laws.
- Possess a working knowledge of accounting and budgeting
- Possess a working knowledge of commercial printing
contracts and actual printing procedures.
- Be thoroughly familiar with the constitution and bylaws
of the Circus Fans Association of America, and correspond ing documents of the
National Circus Preservation Society and the Edith Johnston Memorial trust
Fund.
- Possess a working knowledge of postal regulations.
- Have demonstrated experience dealing with a variety of
news and information sources, including maintaining effective working
relationships with circus officials and staffs.
- Because the general public is often given the name of
the editor as the point of contact for the organization, the editor must know
individuals, the organization and its workings in order to direct inquiries and
other materials to the proper persons.
- Be a willing, confidential and respectful sounding
board for all CFA members, a large number of whom seem to have deeply felt
thoughts, comments, complaints and criticisms (constructive and otherwise).
BUSINESS REQUIREMENTS
- Establish and maintain a contractual agreement with a
printing company and commercial mailing company.
- Record all expenses, office supplies, telephone bills,
etc., relative to the editors office and those of staff (advertising and
archives), and submit quarterly expense account to secretary-treasurer.
- Check and approve all bills, and forward them to the
secretary-treasurer.
- Draw up an annual budget. Record all expenses and
income relative to each issue of the magazine.
- Establish and monitor an annual printing schedule to be
used by all contributors to the magazine, printer and mailer.
