FERN STREET CIRCUS Brings ALICE Back To BALBOA PARK In An ALL NEW SHOW ~ THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS -- Friday, MAY 20 through Sunday MAY 29 - 12 Performances Only!

San Diego's own Fern Street Circus promises to send you whirling into a mirrored world where Alice becomes part of a battling Chessboard full of delightful and demanding creatures; as they present their Fifteenth Annual Show in Balboa Park. THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS will play twelve performances only, Friday, May 20 through Sunday, May 29 in the classic open-air ring in Balboa Park at Park Boulevard and Presidents Way.

Fern Street's Artistic Director Cheryl Lindley continues to combine San Diego's own homegrown and topflight Circus talents with the whimsy of Lewis Carroll's classic tales. In this second in the series, Alice begins the chess game as a pawn and grows in knowledge gained from some surprising sources until she takes over as the Queen of a topsy-turvy world filled with never-ending surprises, yet familiar from all our childhoods, made enchantingly visual and physically challenging.

Storytelling reaches new levels as Lindley and the company use non-verbal, athletic circus skills to send the audience into Alice’s battles on the inexplicable Chess board with its confounding playing pieces, bringing to life the Caterpillar, Jabberwocky, TweedleDum and TweedleDee and all the familiar characters in ways never imagined before. Through the Looking-Glass features exciting acrobatic battles and marching flags, multiple aerial artists performing chiffon and lira, Ottavio Canestrelli’s classic unsupported ladder routine, comedy balancing, marvelous illusions and a magic act. Returning favorites are juggling, tumbling, contortion, twirl sport/knife spinning and clowns, clowns, clowns. A perfect day for the entire family!

The company includes:

  • Michael Ahmann (Red Castle)
  • Ottavio Canestrelli (Blue King, Jabberwocky; 8th generation circus family)
  • Bobby Hartman (Red Bishop; from San Francisco's Make*A*Circus)
  • Ariel James (Spanish Web)

  • Cheryl Lindley (Blue Queen, Columbina)

  • Joseph Runyon (Blue Castle)
  • Tommy Stansell (Chess piece)
  • Rebecca Starr (Caterpillar & twin spinning Mirror)

  • Molly Woltman (Twin Spinning Mirror).
  • There will again be multiple Alices’s, played by Sadie Lindley-Kessler, Jenny McConkey and Cathryn Stansell;
