WITTE MUSUEM TO FEATURE HERTZBURG CIRCUS COLLECTION DURING THE SUMMER OF 2004
Circus Fans everywhere are excited about the announcement by the famous Witte Museum in San Antonio, Texas that the museum's SUMMER 2004 EXHIBIT will feature the American Circus. Four galleries of the museum with feature "The Circus Comes to Town", "Under the Big Top", "Las Carpas", and "Carnival Midway". The special exhibit will run June 19 thru September 5, 2004 at 3801 Broadway, San Antonio, Texas.
The excitement for this exhibit came when the museum obtained the famous Hertzburg Circus Collection that for a half century was displayed in its own museum in San Antonio. Lack of funding and attendance made it impractical to continue the museum in its run-down state. The Witte Museum is dedicated to restoring the Hertzburg Collection to the status it deserves.
It is good news that Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus is joining the museum's efforts as a summer partner with plans for a circus gala, an elephant brunch and ongoing performances of Ringling trained clowns and performers. The Shrine Circus in San Antonio has also joined has joined the museum's collaborative committee and will provide advice and support.
Bart Iddins, President of Circus Fans Association of America has been contacted to seek the association's support of the museum's efforts to restore the Hertzburg Collection and to create a permanent setting for this precious circus gem. The museum is seeking a contribution from CFA of $10,000. This request will be have to be addressed by the board of directors. Witte personnel have requested that CFA make its members aware of the museum's restoration efforts and to encourage CFA members to donate to the museum.
The CFA Web Site has created a link to the Witte Museum and Association members can donate to the museum directly from the museum's web site. Making a contribution, no matter the size of gift, is a great way for Circus Fans to help with the preservation of America's circus history. Donations are tax deductible. Make sure that your contribution indicates that you are a CFA member.
It is exciting for circus fans that the great Hertzburg Collection is going to be preserved and be available for circus fans and the general public to enjoy for many years to come.
